One million calories.

Written by Becci on October 21st, 2009

This super interesting new interactive chart from Animal Visuals shows how many animals die for one million calories’ worth of chicken, eggs, beef, veggies, grains, etc.  You can sort it by total, by how many are slaughtered (intentionally, I assume?), and by the harvesting of fields, either to feed us or to feed animals.

Isn’t it fascinating that you can help more animals by dropping chicken and eggs than you can by dropping chicken, beef, and pork combined?

This also brings up the age old and ever compelling (yawn) argument against veganism–that we’re hurting animals accidentally when we harvest our fields, so why bother to curtail  intentional slaughter at all?  I covered this in Arguments Against Veganism, part 3, but this chart says more than I ever could have.

*pfeh* The whole “vegans hurt animals by accident when harvesting fields” is sure a bunch of fooey.

This sure makes me think of a co-worker…in his mid 50s….worked in a tomato factory……

You won’t believe the AMOUNT of tomatoes that get thrown into the compost bins..just because they don’t fit the aesthetic appeal for retail. It’s enough to feed the whole world.

This sure reminds me of the people that say “fruitarianism ain’t sustainable” which is a load of crock too. We got all the fruit we need, and others to come. This whole “retail aesthetics” thing is sure just rash and vain. It hurts..

We got the land we need to feed us all without screwing animals over.

    *sigh*

I won’t give up in what I believe in..for sure.

  2. I heard a guy trying to make this argument to Roger at A Taste of Health and watched Roger single-sentecedly take him down with the “vegans consume less in general, sir” argument.
    Duh! sir.
